Ethiopia Natural Guji

Strawberry jam, elderflower and pamplemousse. Natural Ethiopians are one of our favorite coffees every year, and this lot from Kayon Mountain Farm is a standout: sweet florals on the nose, a wave of strawberry up front and a sparkling grapefruit finish. Bright and juicy as a pour over, and a fun pick for espresso or cold brew.

Making espresso or French press? Choose whole bean and grind right before you brew. Ground for drip is too coarse for espresso and too fine for French press.

ABOUT THIS COFFEE

What it tastes like. This year’s lot from Kayon Mountain Farm opens with sweet florals on the nose and a big wave of strawberry jam on the first sip. It finishes with sparkling grapefruit, a lot like your favorite pamplemousse sparkling water. It’s a natural process coffee: the cherries dry whole in the sun with the fruit still around the seed, which is where all that jammy sweetness comes from.

How we like it. Pour over is where the florals really shine. It also makes a bright, fruity espresso (give it about a week off roast) and a fun, juicy cold brew.

The farm. Kayon Mountain Farm covers 500 hectares, about 300 of them planted in coffee, in the Shakiso district of Guji, about 510 km south of Addis Ababa. Ismael Hassen Aredo and his family have run it since 2012. Coffee grows under acacia and other native shade trees, seedlings come from the farm’s own nursery, and fallen leaves become compost that fertilizes the farm naturally. Ismael is meticulous from harvest to processing, and the farm produces both natural and washed lots.

The people. The farm employs 25 full-time staff and about 300 seasonal workers. It provides free transportation, has helped fund local schools, and pays pickers above the going rate so they come back year after year.

The region. Guji is a forested highland area in southern Ethiopia, part of the Oromia region. Until the early 2000s its coffee was grouped with neighboring Sidama, but Guji is now known for its own standout coffees. High elevations and rich red soil give them their bright fruit and floral character.

Why roasted to order tastes better

Most grocery store coffee was roasted weeks or months before it hit the shelf. By the time you open it, the aromatics that make coffee taste sweet and complex are mostly gone.

We don't roast ahead. Your bag is roasted after you order, in a small batch, and shipped on our next roast day, every Wednesday and Thursday. You get it while it's at its best.

Fresher coffee means more sweetness, more flavor and less of that flat, bitter taste.

Why Customers Choose Ethiopia Natural Guji

Everything you want in a great everyday coffee, without the guesswork.

Is it actually fresh?

This coffee is roasted after you place your order and shipped at peak freshness. We do not ship old inventory or warehouse coffee, so your bag arrives fresh and ready to brew.
